Better Tutoring Starts With a Better Method
OUR APPROACH
Kids don't need more school after school. They need better access to the learning that wasn't working the first time.
We didn't want to build another tutoring center where every student works through the same proprietary program. We didn't want kids spending another hour clicking through lessons on a screen. And we didn't want tutoring that exists completely separately from what students are actually learning at school.
So we built Method Labs differently.
Every part of it - from our small class sizes and recurring memberships to our placement system, curriculum, progress tracking, and even the physical learning environment - is intentional. Not because those things sound good on a brochure. Because they're grounded in what we know about how kids learn.

THE RESEARCH IS PRETTY CLEAR
Good Tutoring Isn't a One-Time Rescue Mission.
Decades of education research have given us a pretty clear picture of what helps students learn.
Frequent tutoring in very small groups, with consistent instructors and instruction connected to what students are learning in school, can have a significant impact on student achievement.
Researchers often call this high-impact or high-dosage tutoring. That's why Method Labs is built around recurring memberships rather than drop-in tutoring. One session can help a student finish tonight's homework. Consistent instruction gives us the chance to figure out why the homework was difficult in the first place. And do something about it.

Human Teaching Matters.
Kids spend plenty of time on screens already.
Technology is incredibly useful behind the scenes at Method Labs. We use it to organize information, track progress, identify patterns, and help our tutors make better instructional decisions.
But it isn't the teacher.
Students at Method Labs work with people.
They write. Read. Talk. Explain. Calculate. Ask questions. Get stuck. Try something else. Defend an answer. Change their mind.
And our tutors are watching all of it.
Because the wrong answer is often the least interesting piece of information a student gives us.
We want to know why they thought it was right.
That's where teaching begins.

High Expectations. Different Paths.
Kids aren't standardized.
Students arrive here with wildly different stories. Some have significant unfinished learning.
Some understand the material but have lost confidence. Some need to talk through it.
Some need twenty examples. Some need one good question.
We use modeling, discussion, explicit instruction, guided practice, repetition, visual representations, hands-on learning, questioning, and plenty of pencil and paper. Not
every student needs every strategy.
That's the point.

FIRST, WE FIGURE OUT WHAT'S
ACTUALLY GOING ON.
Placement Is More Than a Grade-Level Label.
A seventh grader isn't simply "at a fifth-grade level."
Learning doesn't work that neatly.
A student might understand proportional reasoning beautifully but still struggle with fraction operations. Another might read complex text thoughtfully but have a decoding or fluency gap that makes reading unnecessarily exhausting.
Those differences matter.
That's why students begin Method Labs with diagnostic placement.
We're not looking for one number that tells us whether a child is "behind." We're trying to understand the individual skills underneath their performance.
What do they already know?
Where does their understanding start to break down?
Which missing skills are getting in the way of what they're being asked to learn now?
Then we use that information to decide where instruction should begin.
And as students grow, we adjust.
A placement is a starting point—not a label.
The Space Matters Too
Method Labs was designed as a learning environment—not a row of cubicles.
We think intentionally about the physical space, the amount of distraction in a room, and how it feels to walk through the door. Kids should be able to think here. They should also be able to talk, wonder, draw something out, manipulate an idea, make a mistake, and try again.
Our roots are in science education, and that shows up in far more than the curriculum.
We look at the research behind the environment itself—from the full-spectrum lighting overhead to the colors on the walls, the layout of the rooms, and the balance between stimulation and distraction.
Those details may seem small, but we don't think they're insignificant.
At Method Labs, “research-based” isn't a label we put on the program. It's the standard we use to make decisions. If there's evidence that something can help students focus, feel more comfortable, engage more deeply, or learn more effectively, we want to understand it—and, when it makes sense, build it into the space.
Because the teacher's job isn't simply to deliver information. It's to create the conditions where learning can happen.
